Gaga for Greens!

By Betsy Wenz, guest blogger and TableTop Farm CSA member

Early each spring, as the days grow longer and warmer, I become ravenously hungry for everything green and leafy. From mild and sweet spinach and lettuce to the spicier mustard and Asian greens, deliciousness and variety abound. Once you dig your fork into the world of spring greens, you won't turn back!

What's New on the Farm

SUMMER CSA DELIVERY WILL BEGIN the week of June 5th & 7th.

Half shares will be assigned to pick up either that or the following week.

Bedding plants--tomatoes, kale, sage, oregano, thyme, and assorted flowers-- are ready for the Ames Main Street Farmers' Market and the Des Moines Downtown Farmers' Market! Find us there every Saturday morning, starting May 5th.

We haven't needed to use these quick hoops-- lettuce is thriving in this spring's mild weather!

See photos from the April 23rd and 24th High Tunnel Build here.

Continuing to fix up the packhouse, this time with new doors!

Working on the belly mount of the Farmall. The goal: keep weeds down with better cultivation.

In early April, Luke burned the prairie area next to the field. See our blog for the in-depth story.

30,000 onions, leeks, and shallots made the trip from the greenhouse to TableTop. Thanks to the Bremer family for loaning us the 15-passenger Bremer Bus!

The onions were planted in just two days by a crew of five--one on the front of the tractor, and four on the back of the waterwheel transplanter.

In late March, with the help of friends, we cut through 2800 lbs of Yukon Gold and Dark Red Norland seed potatoes.

One acre of potatoes was planted in under four hours with this two-person planting crew, a tractor driver, and a fabulous planter--rented from our friends at Soper Farms, in Emmetsburg, IA.
